This new series explores personal stories like ghosts that haunt as one grows older and when one remains silent within memories. I recognize elements and symbols from my previous series I Am the Cicada, such as the ear, the cicada, and the seashell. This time I have incorporated a woman-house, inspired by some drawings of Bourgeois, The Femme Maison (1947). That drawing attracted me because I recognized in it my past with my home, with my family, with that which torments and cannot be changed. No matter how much history has advanced or how much progress we have achieved, being a woman is always a complex and difficult experience to live.
In the drawing, I apply strategies I had already explored, taken from Surrealism, such as juxtaposition, metamorphosis, and the combination of different perspectives that divide the scene into distinct moments. The simultaneity of being here, today and yesterday, in the same space.
In the use of anthropomorphism in Louise Bourgeois’s drawings, there is a search for a language that reveals countless stories and the recognition of an identity marked by gender. It is not clear what she represents, what she knows, what she carries. I don’t even know what she wants.
